First conditional
Angleščina · 9. razred
The First Conditional helps us talk about future events that are real or very likely to happen. It's about cause and effect: if one thing happens, then another thing will probably happen. These are for things that are possible, not just dreams!

Ključni pojmi
- If clause
- The part stating the condition (e.g., 'If it rains...')
- Main clause
- The part stating the result (e.g., '...I will stay home.')
- Present simple
- Verb tense used in the 'if' clause for future possibilities.
- Will
- Used in the main clause to show a future result.
Structure of the First Conditional
The First Conditional has two parts: the 'if' clause (the condition) and the main clause (the result). The rule is: If + present simple, will + base form of the verb. We use the present simple in the 'if' clause, even though we are talking about the future. For the result, we use 'will' plus the basic form of the verb.
- Uses 'if + present simple' for the condition.
- Uses 'will + base verb' for the result.
Examples and Word Order
For example: 'If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.' This shows a possible situation and its likely outcome. You can also change the order: 'We will stay at home if it rains tomorrow.' When the 'if' clause comes second, you usually don't need a comma.
- Example: If I study hard, I will get good grades.
- Order can be changed: Main clause first, then 'if' clause (no comma).
Zanimivosti
- We DO NOT use 'will' after 'if' in the 'if' clause.
- The First Conditional helps talk about future plans and possibilities.
Povzetek
The First Conditional describes a possible future situation and its probable result. It connects an 'if' clause (present simple) with a main clause ('will' + base verb). This structure is useful for discussing realistic future events.
