The Clock Face and the Past Rule
English speakers mostly use a 12-hour clock divided into two halves. When the big hand is on the right side (1 to 30 minutes), we use the word "past" to describe minutes after the hour. In this case, we always say the minutes first and then the hour. For example, 05:10 is ten past five.
- The right side of the clock is for minutes past the hour.
- Always say the minutes first, then the hour.
Using "To" and the Half Past Rule
When the big hand is on the left side (31 to 59 minutes), we use "to" to count minutes until the next hour. For example, 08:45 is quarter to nine. A very important rule is "half past," which refers to the hour that has already passed. Unlike in Slovenian, 10:30 is half past ten.
- Use "to" to count how many minutes are left until the next hour.
- Half past always refers to the hour that has already passed.
Digital Time and AM/PM
You can also tell the time by simply reading the numbers as they appear on a digital clock, such as "eight twenty" for 8:20. Because of the 12-hour system, we use AM and PM to distinguish between morning and afternoon. AM is from midnight until noon, while PM is from noon until midnight.
- Digital time is told by reading the numbers directly.
- Use AM for the morning and PM for the afternoon or evening.
Zanimivosti
- In English, the 12-hour clock system is more common than the 24-hour system.
- The rule for 'half past' is different from Slovenian because it literally means half after the hour.
