How much is it? Prices, pounds and euros
Angleščina · 7. razred
When we travel or go shopping abroad, we need to know how to ask for prices and understand different currencies. In Slovenia, we use the Euro, but in the United Kingdom, people use the Pound Sterling.

Ključni pojmi
- Price
- The amount of money you must pay for something.
- Cheap
- Something that does not cost a lot of money.
- Expensive
- Something that costs a lot of money.
- Receipt
- The piece of paper that shows what you bought.
- Change

Currency and Symbols
The symbol for the Euro is € and it is divided into 100 cents. The British Pound uses the symbol £ and is divided into 100 pence. When saying a price like £7.50, we say 'seven pounds fifty' and usually do not say the word 'and'. For small amounts like 50p, people often say 'fifty pee'.
- The Euro (€) and the Pound (£) are different currencies.
- One pound or euro is divided into 100 smaller units.
- Say the main currency first, then the cents or pence.
Asking for the Price
To ask about the price of one item, use the phrase 'How much is...'. If you are asking about two or more things, use 'How much are...'. For example, you ask 'How much is this book?' but 'How much are these jeans?'. Remember that in English, we always say 'Money is...' because money is an uncountable noun.
- Use 'is' for singular items and 'are' for plural items.
- The word 'money' is always used with 'is', never 'are'.
- Always use 'please' and 'thank you' to be polite.
At the Shop
When you buy something, you can pay with paper notes or metal coins. If you pay with a large note, the shop assistant gives you back your change. You will also receive a receipt, which is a piece of paper that shows what you bought. Items can be expensive if they cost a lot, or cheap if the price is low.
- Notes are paper money and coins are metal money.
- The receipt is your proof of purchase.
- Change is the money you get back from the assistant.
Zanimivosti
- In the UK, people often say 'p' (pronounced 'pee') instead of saying 'pence'.
- Money is an uncountable noun, so you can never say 'money are'.
